SIR JAMES MITCHELL TO LAUNCH BOOK AT CAVE SHEPHERD VISTA TODAY (THURS., NOV 22)
SIR JAMES MITCHELL, former Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, will launch his new book, Beyond the Islands at Cave Shepherd's Vista store at 4 p.m. today, Thursday, November 22.
Published by Macmillan Caribbean and distributed locally by Pages Bookstore, the autobiography, which has been called "gripping", is said to reflect the candor of Sir James.
It speaks to his life as the son of a seafarer and traces his journey from the tender age of eight when he lost his father in the Bermuda Triangle. The memoirs go on to tell the tale of his life as a man, of him being penniless in Europe, leading observer missions to Nicaragua and Hungary, sailing in the Grenadines with Pierre Trudeau and Prince Charles and his association with political affairs.
Tracey Lloyd, regional director marketing at Duty Free Caribbean said they were pleased to welcome such a prestigious Caribbean icon to Barbados. "Sir James has spent over two decades in Caribbean politics and on the international scene. He is a symbol of Caribbean pride and success in his sphere and we are pleased to be hosting this book signing and to have Bajans meet him."
Founder of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in 1975, Sir James served four consecutive terms as the party's leader and was elected Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1972, a position he held until 1974 before being reelected from 1984-2000.
During his tenure as the country's leader he was credited with historical land reforms in the country. His charisma is also said to have earned him respect on the international stage, allowing him to note both the former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Cuban leader Fidel Castro among his political comrades.
Sir James' memoirs are currently on sale at all Pages Bookstores.
