WINDSURFING CLASSES FOR 20

TWENTY lucky children will get free windsurfing lessons from world-ranked Barbadian windsurfer, Brian Talma.

The two-week experience, in association with Cave Shepherd and the Ministry of Education, is being held and targets children aged eight to 16, with lessons by Talma, son Nathaniel and five instructors.

The camp will run five days a week, three hours a day, from this Saturday (July 16) to Wednesday, July 27 and participants must be able to swim at least 100 metres and have parental consent.

"This is not just another camp, but a future job opportunity which promotes our beach culture which impacts heavily on tourism. The camp will instill in the kids passion and appreciation for the beach, our major tourist attraction," Talma explained.

Participants come from the island's 103 primary and secondary schools through the Ministry of Education.

Anita Elms, regional marketing manager for Duty Free Caribbean says, "Cave Shepherd is always willing to help the youth and Talma is a role model to who they can look up. Therefore, it is imperative that we support him and his very exciting and educational camp. We are proud to be associated with such a venture that not only them but gives them to alternative employment opportunities."

Noting that the Ministry's mandate is to promote all sports, Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports, Reginald Farley says, "Windsurfing is an activity that promotes individuality and Barbados is among the top ten windsurfing destinations in the world. "Therefore we should promote it by producing more Brian Talmas and help to get them get onto the world stage in much the same way Cave Shepherd has backed Talma over recent years. We are proud to be involved in this camp that aims to boost our tourism product."

Cave Shepherd hopes to make this the first of many exciting summer events to come.
