CROP OVER COMES TO CAVE SHEPHERD'S SHOW WINDOWS

CROP Over has came to Cave Shepherd's show windows from the hands of Barbados Community College (BCC) students on summer attachment at the Broad Street Department store.

The two windows, located next to Shepherd's Gate alley, have been uniquely and creatively decorated by Tonya Wiles, Alisha Stoute, Justin Odle, Christopher Burnett, Antonio Cumberbatch, Amour Chandler and Rachel Clarke, who took on the job of building a beautiful Crop Over display for public enjoyment.

The show windows highlight costumes from Crop Over bands, Baje, Power X 4, Wednesday 2000 and Refugees and DutyFree Caribbean regional marketing manager, Anita Elms said "We have to thank them for readily agreeing to have the students display their costumes in the windows and in our stores. We brought the the BCC interns in at Christmas and their creative energy and output was so great that we wanted them back for Crop Over."

"The idea for this type of window design began at Christmas with the Cinderella theme and we're using the same concept for Crop Over, this time depicting actual events that happen during the season." said Visual Arts graduate, Tonya Wiles.

"We went to Bayshore, looked at their setup and used it as the model for our scene. There are mannequins in Cave Shepherd Ladies and Men's Wear as well as outfits from On the Beach. The idea was to create as real a party scene as possible." noted Alisha Stoute, Interior Design second semester sophomore at the Bob Jones University in South Carolina.

Cave Shepherd, a proud supporter of Crop Over celebrations, shows its support for the festival in a special manner, making yearly contributions to the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) during the season and sponsoring the Cave Shepherd All Stars tent for more than 12 years.

Justin Odle, another Visual Arts graduate, plans to take a year off to work in architecture before going on to further his studies. Antonio Cumberbatch has already begun to make his mark in his chosen field of Fashion Design. He recently took the local and regional fashion industry by storm at the Caribbean Fashion Week in Jamaica with his extremely vibrant line entitled Posh Punk.

Amour Chandler and Rachel Clarke completed their Bachelors in Fine Arts and Graphic Arts. Chandler has written a children's book titled Lamplighter about a character that fights against AIDS, she is hoping to be published and is working towards having her own graphic design business. Come September, Clarke will be starting classes at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill campus where she will study Humanities and Education with an eye to becoming an art teacher.

Fourth year student, Christopher Burnett plans to continue his studies in theatre design in Britain and ultimately work in the West End after he graduates from the BCC, "It's been fun working with this group and it has reiterated the fact that any work that involves artistic conceptualization is much harder than managing a store because you're constantly having to think outside the box in a very fast paced and demanding environment. Said Burnett whose resume boasts the set of Miss Barbados World 2004 and Portfolio 2005.

This internship proves to be a great opportunity for the students to build their portfolios and will give them more exposure in their chosen fields. During the summer, they will also be in charge of all signage and Crop Over decorations for all Cave Shepherd and Harrisons stores, as well as the instore displays.
